Binary tension is metronymic of the arc of Clark’s work. The artist’s drawings exemplify this quality with their juxtapositions of the abject and the transcendental or the desirable and the repellant, etc. She began drawing during the worst period of her struggle with the illness which confined her to a wheelchair for 12 years. At the pinnacle she was bedridden for two years and at several junctures near death. The content of these drawings reflect those external circumstances.
